George Washington's Rules of Decent Behavior
George Washington spent time analyzing and collecting rules that he felt constituted decent behavior. His 110 rules include such gems as “Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another, though he were your enemy” and “Labor to keep alive in your breast that little celestial fire called conscience.” We mention these rules often in our family, especially when someone laughs at her own joke (thus breaking one of Washington’s rules!).
