"All Set for 8th Grade" Complete Curriculum

Continue with the exciting US history and literature studies during the 8th grade. You'll be using Books 6-11, along with the wonderful historical fiction novels in the literature pack below, to bring American history to life for your teen! Writing assignments can be themed on your history studies. This is a great year, preparing for high school, and getting a foundation as an American!

Wordsmith Craftsman
After you finish Wordsmith, advance to this self-directed program for building and polishing practical writing skills. You will learn to organize and classify ideas, write letters to suit any occasion, and organize your original ideas into excellent compositions. Includes study skills, note-taking, summarizing, brush-up on mechanics, technical skills, paragraphing, and more. The final unit in the book teaches essay writing. Paperback, 93 pages, for ages 14 and up.

Vocabulary Cartoons, Book 2
Vocabulary Cartoons has revolutionized learning vocabulary words in my homeschool! Everybody likes cartoon drawings, so there isn't any coaxing to get kids going on this book. Besides a humorous visual cartoon, there is an often silly "sound-alike" clue. There are also several sentences using the word so you get the feel of it. Plus, an easy pronunciation guide. I am learning right along with my kids, and find myself relying on the memory clues. For example, the word "capacious" means roomy and spacious. I learned the word while quizzing my kids on Vocabulary Cartoons, and I later encountered it in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, describing a room in a mansion. Instantly I saw in my mind's eye the drawing of a skinny boy with a huge cap on, a cap that was spacious. A capacious cap! Vocabulary words are taken from the SAT test, which gives me a measure of confidence that they are words worth knowing. Each unit is divided into 10 words, with a full page for each word. The words in each lesson are grouped in a logical way, such as all the words with the same prefix . . . more.

Editor in Chief, Book B1
Here's an exciting way to perfect those English skills. Each entry in this write-in workbook is a brief story accompanied by a picture. But watch out, it is trickier than it seems. Each story contains several errors in punctuation, grammar, usage, etc. These workbooks are sure to develop a sharp editing eye. All answers and explanations are in the back of the book, so your child can correct his own work. These books are challenging and fun!

Apologia Physical Science Text + Solutions Manual
Physical Science covers weather, the atmosphere, structure of the earth, motion, Newton's laws, gravity, and physics. Explores myths created by environmentalists (which I find necessary and much appreciated!). Hands-on experiments use household supplies. Even if you don't feel confident teaching science to your children, you will find the help you need in these books designed especially for homeschoolers. Written by a former university professor who is Christian, these textbooks are presented in conversational style, as if the author is having a good talk with the reader. Concepts are easy to understand, and good experiments can easily be performed at home. Each course comes as a 2-book set: the hardcover textbook and a paperback solutions/test manual. These are the bestselling science books among homeschoolers! Companion CD available (sold separately). Each course has 12-16 modules, which can be paced for 2 weeks each, for a complete school years study. The curriculum is backed by free question/answer support in case you need tutoring. Current 2nd edition.

Saxon Algebra 1/2: Complete Set
I wish all curriculum choices were as easy as this! Saxon has proven to have the best mathematics text available today. Every school in the U.S. that has used them has raised college board scores 20% and has tripled Calculus enrollment, has doubled Physics enrollment and has reduced the number of kids on the slow track by over 50%. The reason? Normal math books introduce a new concept with each chapter, then drop that topic as the next chapter goes on to something new. This week, it's multiplication; next week it is fractions, and I can't remember multiplication! In Saxon books, the concepts are practiced daily, over and over, until they are fully automatic and math becomes easier and more enjoyable. Complete Set includes a non-consumable hardcover Textbook, Tests and Answer Key. Hardcover textbook has approx 125 lessons plus additional topics. Answers to odd numbered problems are in the back of the book. Approximately 500 pages. Tests and Answer Key included. The Solutions Manual (sold separately) gives step-by-step solutions to all the practices and problems. Current 3rd edition. . . . more.

D.I.V.E. CD for Saxon Algebra 1/2
Imagine your homeschool without Mom having to be the math teacher! Imagine your children going quietly to the computer with their Saxon math book and having a gentle, soft spoken male tutor explain the lesson's concept and working the practice problems on the chalkboard just for them. Imagine no more frustration and tears because things are so very well explained, and they can be re-explained as many times as needed in the same patient tone of voice! You don't have to imagine any longer, because this is exactly what D.I.V.E. Into Math has done for my homeschool! Hurrah! D.I.V.E. means "Digital Interactive Video Education," and what your student will see is the computer screen transformed into a chalkboard and the teacher's chalk writing appearing as he talks and works the problems. I balked at spending $50 to explain an already pricey math book, until I used this fabulous program. Now I say: "It is worth every penny!" I haven't taught math in my homeschool for 2 years now and my children are doing better in math than they ever have before! Note: you will need the matching Saxon textbook (of the same edition) to use this program. Each level Includes one or two CD-ROMS teaching every lesson in the book! This DIVE CD plays on Mac and Windows 98 and higher operating systems, including Vista. Current 3rd edition.

A History of US: Volumes 6-10 + Volume 11 (Sourcebook)
Who doesn't love a good story? These unique books will make a history-lover out of you and your children! I read them just for fun. Author Joy Hakim was distressed when her 7th grade daughter thought public school history was dull, and she set out to make it interesting for her. This incredible award-winning series is the result! Masterful storyteller, Joy, weaves the exciting adventures that make up the history of our nation so that they read like a novel. You wont find these unique stories and photos elsewhere. I cant imagine a college course containing anything more. I initially thought these books were too much of an investment for history, but once I started reading, I was hooked. They are definitely worth the money. (Not written from a Christian perspective, so you will find some cave man type info in the first book, and bits of Woman's Lib throughout.) Paperback books, color photos, approximately 200 pages each, for ages 11 to adult. Riveting reading your children are going to love American History! Current 3rd Edition. Note: If you are following my curriculum recommendations, you'll use Book 1-5 of this set plus Book 11 during 7th grade, and Book 6-11 during 8th grade.

Uncle Tom's Cabin
I love this book! I'd like to rename it: How to Be a Christian. Lincoln claimed that Harriett Beecher Stowe's story was responsible for starting the Civil War. Although it was written 150 years ago, the issues of good and evil, kindness and cruelty, faithfulness or despair they are all still just as vital. Most of all, this book makes one know that the color of the skin has nothing to do with the condition of the heart. The classic story of slavery. Paperback, 384 pages.

Little Women
One of the best-loved stories of all time! Sweet family life is depicted so warmly! In picturesque nineteenth-century New England, tomboyish Jo, beautiful Meg, fragile Beth, and romantic Amy come of age while their father is off to war. Very sweet! Paperback, unabridged.

Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Here's the classic story of Tom Sawyer and his adventures in early America on the Mississippi River. A wonderful book that we have loved! Ages 9-12. Paperback and unabridged, 282 pages.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn + Study Guide
Here's the ideal tool for teaching great literature in your home! Study Edition has the complete unabridged work of literature followed by a comprehensive Study Guide which includes chapter-by-chapter summaries, explanations and discussions of the plot, question-and-answer sections, author biography, analytical paper topics, list of characters, bibliography, and more. When teaching, I use the chapter summary in the Study Guide section for a quick overview and reminder of the chapter's contents, and then lead a discussion using the thought provoking questions and plot discussions. Includes the unabridged text of Twain's classic novel plus a complete study guide. 336 pgs.

Understood Betsy
This delightful old book is not only wonderful to read but really sets one to pondering the issue of free choice and how children (and all people) thrive when they are able to govern their own selves. In fact, as I was reading it I decided right then and there to teach my daughter Louisa to use the stove (with permission), and watched her great satisfaction in being self-reliant! Set in the early 1900s, 9-year-old Betsy is a pampered and overprotected fragile little girl who is afraid of her own shadow until a turn of events proves to her that she is quite capable. Understood Betsy is one of those dear books that you just can't put down and want to go on forever! Paperback, 214 pages, for reading age 11 and up, or marvelous read aloud for the whole family. Unabridged.

Call of the Wild
Stolen from his family, a dog named Buck must quickly learn the harsh law of survival among the men and dogs of the gold-crazed Alaskan wilderness. Unabridged, 128 pages. Ages 9 to adult.

Little Britches
Ralph Moody was eight years old in 1906 when his family moved from New Hampshire to a Colorado ranch. Through his eyes we experience the pleasures and perils of ranching there early in the twentieth century. Auctions and roundups, family picnics, irrigation wars, tornadoes and wind storms give authentic color to Little Britches. So do adventures, wonderfully told, that equip Ralph to take his father's place when it becomes necessary. Paperback and unabridged, 260 pages.

To Kill A Mockingbird
A classic Pulitzer Prize winner and the most widely read book in America at one time, this book is so, so good and thought-provoking! The Deep South in the 1930's was a place of raw prejudice. Atticus Finch, a lawyer with integrity, stands alone in upholding justice. This story is told through the eyes of Attitcus' children, and is full of warmth and humor, while dealing with a very serious issue. Atticus Finch is a hero that I want my children to know! An excellent story! Paperback and unabridged, 281 pages.

Journey to America
It was 1938, and something terrible was happening in Germany. Suddenly, there were more and more restrictions for the Jews: yellow stars they had to wear, schools they could not attend, things they were forbidden to do. The Nazis were in power and Lisa Platt was scared. Her father knew they had to escape, and he left for America in the middle of the night. He promised to send for Lisa, her mother, and her two sisters when there was enough money. Until then, they were to live in Switzerland waiting. And with the waiting, came hardship none of them could ever have imagined. Paperback and unabridged, 150 pages, for ages 10 and up.

The Chosen
This is the classic story of two fathers and two sons and the pressures on them to pursue the religion they share in the way that is best suited to each. And as the boys grow into young men, they discover in the other a lost spiritual brother, and a link to an unexplored world that neither had ever considered before. A life-changing book! Paperback, 304 pages.

The Hiding Place
Corrie Ten Boom and her family became leaders in the Dutch Underground during the Nazi invasion of Holland, hiding Jewish people in their home and aiding their escape. Christ's teachings were their guide and inspiration. A classic that I highly recommend! Paperback and unabridged, 241 pages, for ages teen through adult.

The Giver
In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's "Receiver of Memories". Discovering the disturbing truth about his utopian world, he struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. A glimpse into a future world in which the government controls everything, even memories and emotion. You won't forget this book! Paperback and unabridged, 208 pages.
