Friends! They are such an important part of learning how to get along.
Hello,
Well-adjusted Isn't that what we want most for our children? Sure, we'd like them to be talented, outstanding, intelligent—even geniuses—but their achievements will command little influence if they do not know how to get along with others. Social skills rank high on my homeschool priority list!
How do you teach good social skills? Just like any other skill, the methods must be modeled, plus taught (hopefully in the most fun, memorable way possible), and then opportunities to practice can transform those skills into a happy habit.
Here are some of my favorite tools that I've used to teach my children how to behave, and get along graciously (still learning!):
*Blunders Board Game
Learn social skills through this fun and funny award-winning game.
*The 21 Rules of This House
Very basic "how to get along" rules with cartoon illustrations.
*I Don't Have to Make Everything All Better
Teach your children be responsible for themselves, and have some peace, Mom.
*Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories
Best stories for teaching how to behave. We love 'em!
*I'd Be Your Princess, I'd Be Your Hero
These royal tales model how to be kind and mannerly to your parents.
May we all raise happy, social well-adjusted children!

Diane

view | The 21 Rules of This House The first lessons in homeschool are about getting along with others, not bugging them, and obeying your teacher, right? Here's the perfect book to get you going on those important lessons!
Each rule is presented in a full-page cartoon picture for young children to color as you teach each rule. Easy teaching instructions are included too. Each rule in this book is also included as a tear-out poster so you can study and master them one by one. We put ours in a binder in plastic page protectors as we learned them, then we can easily review them often. Some of the rules are "We obey our Lord Jesus Christ," "We tell the truth," "When we make a mess, we clean it up," and "We do not create unnecessary work for others" (I like that one!). The book ends with a master list of the 21 Rules ready to post as a good reminder.
I have focused on one rule a week, introducing it with an impromptu story that I concoct to go along with the picture. My children listen attentively and are ready for the punchline, which is always "the rule." Then we memorize the rule. We review these each morning as school begins and remember to put the new rule into practice throughout the day.
It sure helps to have a rule to fall back on when correcting children, rather than just saying "We don't do that." When a certain little boy in my home laughed to see his sister cry, I could remind him of one of our rules: "When someone is sad, we comfort him." Don't miss this book!

view | Uncle Arthur Storytime Books: Teach Character with Bedtime Stories! 44% OffEverybody loves a story! Evenings at my house are time for read-aloud, and my children's favorite stories have always been Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories. These charming, old-fashioned stories have incredible appeal because they are true! These tales really happened, and they sometimes turn out disastrously! Each story is just a few pages long, so it is easy to sneak one in here and there in a busy schedule.
The five-volume set has a publication date of 1976, and it is actually a collection of the best stories found in the 1964 version, so you know old-fashioned Christian values are alive and well. In addition to the real stories about real children, each book has a story from the Bible. Each book has 192 pages, a glossy picture cover, and wonderful color drawings throughout. The very best thing about these stories is that they speak right to a child's heart! I read my daughter Louisa the story "Two Carolines," a story about a little girl who was very pleasant and lovable when out of the house but not very happy to those at home. A day later, Louisa came to me to confess, "I am like that story, Mom." The best part was that I never said one word! I read the story out loud, then Louisa saw herself in it and strived to correct her own behavior. Ooh, hard to beat that kind of powerful teaching—teaching through parables!
One of the stories my grown children remember best is "The Hollow Pie." Seems a certain young man always grabbed the biggest piece for himself rather than watching out for others and saying, "You go first." After a very disappointing dinner, one very sorry boy learned that maybe the biggest isn't always the best!
If a set will bless the whole family for years to come, this is it! As always, your satisfaction is unconditionally guaranteed.

view | My Favorite Book on Getting Along Better With Other People (family especially!) I have to admit that the first time I looked at this book, I really didn't believe the title! After all, that is what mothers are for—isn't it?—to make everything all better!? Learn how to be an understanding, loving, true friend to your family and associates with one simple principle: empathy. Allow them to take responsibility for themselves, and find some peace, Mom! Instead of feeling like you have to control things, or solve others' problems, you can learn to be an understanding listener and empower others to find their own solutions. I highly recommend this very practical book that you will put to use the moment you begin reading it. It has made our family life so much better!

view | Standin' Tall Character Training to Music I love the cheery, value-teaching songs and motivating stories that these wonderful read-along book/tape sets provide. In fact, they have been a integral part of my childraising. Each CD contains a unique, original story with modern-day children as characters. Happy songs with easy-to-remember tunes and lyrics are included within the story. The follow-along storybook opens to a full-page drawing (suitable for coloring) on each spread, as well as the text of the story and the words to the songs. My children love these and listen to them over and over again, learning these wonderful character-building songs! My favorite set is "Obedience." The children in the story accidentally end up in the Land of Disobey, where no one keeps any rules and everything goes haywire. I often find myself singing the song, "Better Obey Your Mother" (from this set) to my children to help them remember to obey. What great lessons for young ones! view | Bad-Habit Correcting Picture Books Wonderful help for parents who are stumped on how to handle interrupters and tattle-talers! These colorful picture books tell the story of a child with an annoying habit and how he whipped it! My kids loved these fun books, and I could see them taking mental notes as the insightful story shows how other children and adults are annoyed by these bad habits. Learn to breathe your interruption right out your nose and save it for the right time to talk. Being a tattle-tale just might make your tongue grow very long and purple spotted, but don't worry—there are some great rules to help you not tattle! Paperback, 32 pages, for ages 4 to 10 years old.

view | Uncommon Courtesy Once your children have the 21 Rules of This House down pat, it is time to turn your attention to the big world with some courteous know-hows on living with your fellowman respectfully and happily. Courtesy really has become uncommon! Maybe it is different where you live, but out West it seems that rudeness is the rule.
When we were young, if our parents didn't teach us to be mannerly, it still rubbed off from society, since others expected you to behave properly. Not always so today—it is time for this book! Uncommon Courtesy for Kids teaches table manners, phone manners, rules for church, courtesy words such as "pardon me," "please," and "thank you," how to treat adults, how to act on public transportation, manners in the car, and more.
Each topic is treated by listing several rules in large type so that it can be used as a visual aid or poster. The rules are also illustrated in full-page black-and-white cartoon drawings. We must choose to be courteous and develop the discipline of courtesy each day. We do not stumble into being a gentlemen or a lady. A good one!

view | George Washington's Rules of Decent Behavior George Washington spent time analyzing and collecting rules that he felt constituted decent behavior. His 110 rules include such gems as "Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another, though he were your enemy" and "Labor to keep alive in your breast that little celestial fire called conscience." We mention these rules often in our family, especially when someone laughs at her own joke (thus breaking one of Washington's rules!). Promotes gentility and provides an interesting glimpse into our beloved founding father. Paperback booklet, 18 pages, illustrated.

Telephone etiquette, thank-you notes, and which fork to use are explained in cute cartoon drawings and explanations. I especially like the quiz cartoon page on what constitutes a "nosy question"—now that is valuable information! This book presents a wonderfully comprehensive and kid-friendly look at how to behave. Paperback, 116 pages, color drawings, for ages 8 and up.

view | Let's Fix the Kids Save $40! Yes, I've had that thought many times before! "Time to buckle down and get these kids in line!" I have Dr. James Jones to thank, in large part, for teaching me the principles of childraising that have formed the foundation of child discipline in our home. Learning precious truths by sad experience in his own family, Dr. Jones's hard-earned lessons make the principles he teaches real and credible. Dr. Jones is hilarious to listen to while teaching those true principles that make so much sense and are so desperately needed to help children learn to be responsible, respectful, happy people. Set of 16 CD's are life-changing when applied to your own children's behavior. One small warning: you might need a little "fixin" yourself. Do yourself and your children a favor and apply this program!

Hi!
I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 14 to 34) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 23 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do. My hope in writing is to share experiences, and hopefully we can encourage one another in this wonderful, intense adventure of childraising--that is really what homeschooling is, after all.
Hoping to help, if I can!
Love, Diane
