My daughter Emily and her "scary" boyfriend!

Hello,

Harvest time, and my orchards and garden are overflowing with bounty . . . such a ripe and lovely time of year! I often think it is a delightful last touch that God put on summer, to end it with such brilliant red, yellow, orange and gold "fireworks"! The gourds are so unusually shaped, odd and creative—like God is enjoying every moment of putting the earth to bed for the winter.

The abundance and the time of year turns my thoughts to 5 kernels of corn. Each time we study the Pilgrims, I am deeply touched by their sacrifices and their stories, especially the fact that during "the starving time" their rations were reduced to five single kernels of Indian corn. For a great visual learning moment, we tried putting 5 kernels of dried corn in our mouths and gnawing on it while we read Stories of the Pilgrims. What a tiny bit of food to survive a winter's day on! From such a humble circumstances, our great nation sprung up! I feel grateful for the abundance we have now, and thankful for our Pilgrim's fathers' sacrifice. On every plate at the beginning of our Thanksgiving meal we set 5 kernels of corn . . . to remind us. And one of my children recites the poem, "Five Kernels of Corn". It always brings tears to my eyes. So very, very thankful!

In my home, harvest time is a season of celebration, starting with bringing in the food we've grown, lasting until the final piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving Day. I like to decorate with fall leaves, gourds, squash and pumpkins we've grown, and scarecrows and corn stalks. In my living room, we hang a big floor to ceiling paper that we draw and write items we are grateful for, as they come to mind. Seeing it daily helps us all remember how blessed we are!

So, for the harvest season, I offer you my favorite resources:

*Stories of the Pilgrims

My absolutely favorite book on the Pilgrims! Read it aloud for fun.

*Felt Pilgrim Hat

Dress the part . . . kids love it!

Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving  60% Off

The actual hero of the Thanksgiving was neither white man nor Indian, but God. In 1608, English traders came to Massachusetts and captured a 12-year old Indian, Squanto, and sold him into slavery. He was raised by Christians and taught faith in God. Ten years later he was sent home to America. Upon arrival, he learned an epidemic had wiped out his entire village. But God had plans for Squanto. God delivered a Thanksgiving miracle: an English-speaking Indian living in the exact place where the Pilgrims land in a strange new world. Of all the Thanksgiving books, this account comes closest to describing the holiday's religious roots and historical beginnings in a lovely illustrated picture book. Hardcover. Hardcover, 32 pages for ages 6 to 11 years.

America's Providential History

Studying American history has brought me such increased witness of God's hand in our nation's history! He truly guided and directed the events of America's founding. This excellent volume is unique in its content and in its aim—to show how God has led and guided this nation. I have discovered information in this book that I've never seen elsewhere. Did you know that when George Washington was sworn into office he leaned over and kissed the Bible?! Did you know that the starving Continental Army was unexpectedly fed a miraculous supply of fish? Using pitchforks and shovels, the men plunged into the freezing water to throw thousands of shad up onto the snowy banks of the Schuylkill River, providing plenty of food for the army. Each inspiring page details God's workings, from the inception of liberty, through the Pilgrim period, the Revolution, and the Civil War. Ends with a call for Americans to turn back to God. Paperback, 294 pages, black-and white-drawings throughout.

Hi!

I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 14 to 34) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 23 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do. My hope in writing is to share experiences, and hopefully we can encourage one another in this wonderful, intense adventure of childraising--that is really what homeschooling is, after all.

Hoping to help, if I can!

Love, Diane
