Louisa and her friends having a "leaf fight" (sorta like a snowball fight) in our backyard
Hello!
H1N1
Sort of strikes fear, huh?
Before the flu visits you, stock up on natural remedies to beat the bug! It is so wonderful to have something you can do to prevent or lessen the flu. Here are my favorite natural remedies that are very effective for keeping well without a doctor's medicine, or when there is no prescription that works. Stock up and be ready . . . there is something you can do to combat it!
I recommend that every family has these things on hand:
 *Colloidal Silver
My favorite general "no-side-effect" antibiotic that anyone (even babies) can take.
 *Air Mask
Prevent contagious diseases and more!
 *Vitamin C
It's essential to have the whole C complex, bioflavonoids included, to get the best benefit
 *Smart Medicine for Healthier Living
A fabulous manual for taking charge of your health!
 *Elderberry
Trumps Tamiflu prescription for the flu!
 *St. John's Wort
Excellent against the H1N1 virus
What's a mother to do?
Going to bed on time and not eating junk food also add to your body's ability to ward off an invading virus. Feed your family greens, especially sprouts, which are high in all vitamins and minerals! Wash your hands frequently. Teach your family to cough into their shirt, rather than out into the air (just tuck your mouth inside the neck edge of your clothing to sneeze or cough—works like a mask to prevent spreading the virus).
What else can we do?! I give my family a dose of these every morning during flu season as prevention:
-Echinacea (to gear up your immune system—10 days on, 4 days off)
-Cod Liver Oil (the natural Vitamin A in it is essential to respiratory health and immunity).
-St. John's Wort (a proven flu buster)
-Elderberry (excellent against flu viruses in research studies)
Chicken soup has proven to be good medicine for colds and the flu. Make my Cure-All Chicken Soup (Jewish Penicillin) for dinner tonight!

I've collected some of my favorite natural health books to share with you. Build your family's self-help library at far less than the cost of a doctor's office visit. Knowledge is priceless when it comes to caring for your family's health needs!
Here's to your health,

Diane
P.S. Don't neglect the simple, traditional medicine that you already have around the house:
*Garlic is a very effective antibiotic. To use it, just thinly slice and dice a clove of garlic into a spoon. Swallow the garlic (without chewing) with a lot of water so you don't taste it. (It will not smell on your breath if you don't chew it up!) Italian immigrants in early America were called "garlic eaters". Their children were sent to school with a clove of garlic around their necks. And they didn't get sick as often! Also great to put in the ear for earache.
*Salt is a natural anasceptic. Use 1 tsp. to a cup of warm water, stirring to dissolve. Gargle vigorously to cleanse the throat and heal a sore throat.
*Vinegar is great for restoring a good ph to your body, so invaders can't multiple. Just a couple of tablespoons in a glass of water is good medicine. If you don't like drinking it, just use a lot on your salad!
*Cinnamon is great for preventing bacterial and viral attacks, and giving the immune system a boost (as are other "hot" spices such as cayenne, ginger, peppermint). Shake it generously into your oatmeal or on whole wheat toast (with raw honey) and reap the benefits.

view | Super Concentrated Elderberry Extract 12% OffElderberry is amazing stuff! The plant looks somewhat like a grapevine and the elderberries are like tiny black grapes in clusters. Research shows that elderberry has a potent effect on strengthening the immune system, especially against all flu viruses. Recent findings by an American research laboratory, confirmed elderberry's ability to block the swine flu (H1N1) virus from infecting cells.* Elderberry extract actually prevented the H1N1 virions from entering the cell, thus guarding the body against infection! What a wonderful discovery!
Elderberry is safe for all ages, including babies. I have checked out every type of elderberry product on the market and believe this liquid elderberry to be the very best! It does not have sugar or other sweeteners like most of the products out there, but is naturally sweet because of the extracting medium: coconut glycerin, a very safe, natural, and delicious substance. Just one teaspoon of this ultra concentrated liquid contains 5,000 mg. of elderberry. The ingredients are just elderberry and coconut glycerin—that's all. Just like I like it!
*Read the research showing Elderberry's effectiveness against every strain of flu.
*Read the research lab results (technical).
*Read how Elderberry trumps Tamiflu prescription for the flu!

view | St John's Wort H1N1 is an "encapsulated" virus, which means it responds to St. John's Wort, thank goodness! Take this as a preventative daily. (St. John's Wort is traditionally know as a mood elevator, and is used for depression, so you can enjoy that side benefit too.) Safe and effective. 180 capsules.

view | Echinacea, 100 caps The best herb for immune system support, increasing white blood cell activity, antibody production and prevents the spread of infection. Echinacea is an essential herbal immune system booster and my first choice when dealing with viral or bacterial infections, fevers, inflammation. Give it regularly as a preventive measure to strengthen the immune system for those who seem to catch everything that is going around: use it for 10 days on, then take a break of 4 days off, then 10 days on, 4 days off, etc.) During acute illness, 1-2 capsules per meal and before bed is a good dosage. German research has conclusively proven the benefit of this healing herb! Plastic bottle holds 100 capsules.

view | Vitamin C, 100 tablets Famous for its role in fighting infection, Vitamin C is essential during an illness. It is vital to have the entire C complex, not just ascorbic acid. I have chosen this brand because it contains the highest bioflavinoid content on the market, and the source is from fresh lemons, oranges, tangerines, etc. Each capsule contains 1000 mg Vitamin C, 650 mg Citrus Bioflavinoids, and 25 mg Rutin. Your need for Vitamin C increases dramatically when illness strikes. During sickness, take to 1 tablets 3 times a day (or more). You'll know when your body has had enough: the symptom is diarrhea. Just back off a few doses, and you'll be at your optimum level during illness. When you are well again, your need for Vitamin C will go down dramatically. 100 capsules in dark amber glass bottle.

view | The ABC Herbal Intended as an herbal guide for the care of children, this book is one of my favorites because the principles are so basic and the specific examples so informative. I read it over and over again for doctoring the whole family. International lecturer Steven Horne has condensed his great knowledge of herbs in this enjoyable-to-read book which even contains recipes to make your own good-tasting liquid herbs for children. Steven's personal experiences in treating his children make this book especially useful. Great for beginning herbalists—I especially like this one! Paperback, 82 pages.

view | How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor This book has saved me the cost of an office call many times over. This excellent book is the first step to becoming responsible for your children's health. The author, a well-respected medical doctor, reveals why routine medical practices such as giving antibiotics for ear infections, or children's Tylenol for fever only make matters worse. Covers prenatal care, birth, breast-feeding, nutrition, immunization, allergies, asthma, hyperactivity, acne, skin problems, ear infections, sore throats, fever, etc. This is not a natural remedies book, but rather a clear and concise explanation of how to know when your doctor is hurting instead of helping and what you can do at home to take care of most problems yourself. Highly recommended! Paperback, 283 pages, by Robert S. Mendelsohn, M.D.

view | Eat Healthy, Feel Great 15% OffI've yakked pretty non-stop over the years to my kids about eating healthful foods, but something in this colorful picture book really spoke the message loud and clear to my daughter Louisa (at 9). After I read it to her, she took it into her bedroom, re-read it and made herself a chart of "Green Light" foods! Dr. William Sears has created a wonderful picture book for parents who are trying to teach their children healthy eating habits by categorizing foods into a simple system of red light (stop!), yellow light (sometimes), and green light (go!) foods. Cute illustrations of a happy family accompany the convincing words. A winner! Hardbound, 32 pages, ages 3 to 10 years.

view | The Herbal Drugstore Just a few years ago, it was hard to find herbal remedies. Now they are appearing on grocery store shelves and in discount stores. view | Vaccines, Autism and Childhood Disorders Whether or not to immunize your children is one of those very difficult decisions that every parent must make. view | Smart Medicine for Healthier Living This is the book for safe and effective home treatment of your family's ills. What I like so much about it is that it describes the symptoms and details of the illness so that you can self-diagnose. Then it covers all treatments available, starting with what a doctor would do (including which prescription drugs are best for the ailment). Then alternative remedies are recommended with their dosages: herbs, supplements, homeopathic, acupressure, diet and other natural means. When I look something up in this useful guidebook, I feel like I have the whole picture and can make a wise, informed decision. Co-written by a medical doctor, a pharmacist and a naturopath. I highly recommend this book! Paperback, oversized, 656 pages.

view | Raw Honey, 5 lb 10% OffRaw alfalfa honey, light amber in color. Has not been heated over 110 deg F in processing. The honey may crystalize, or already be crystalized which happens with all raw honey. The honey can be scooped out for use or melted slowly to preserve its enzymes. To melt again, simply place the container (without the lid) in a pan of water warmed over the stove at very low heat. We place several canning lids between the container and the metal pan. Comes in a handy 5 lb plastic jug containers with a screw-top lid.
Honey also has medicinal qualities that make it good for your food storage program. Honey is still used for wound healing today for those who cannot tolerate antibiotic creams. Honey has also been used for centuries as a treatment for sore throats and coughs, and according to recent research may be more effective than most common medicines.* Just mix lemon juice and honey and and take to coat the throat reducing pain and help in healing. A recent study has shown that honey also reduces allergies. **
Grocery store honey has been pasteurized, which cancels its healing properties. Most have sugar or water added to keep the honey free flowing. Raw honey will thicken in time (about 2 months) but it does not effect its properties. It is, in fact, a way that you can be sure you have real raw honey!
(Note: wait until infants are a year old before introducing honey.)

view | Sprout Master: Double Sprouter 11% OffI wish you could see my kitchen. I bought every sprouter on the market and took it for a "test drive". I feel like Goldilocks: most were too small, some were too tippy, some did not drain well, but this one . . . well, it's just right! Why do I like it? You can sprout a full tray in a minimum of counter space. All you have to do is run it under the tap to rinse 2 x day. Let drain and set back on its tray. Easy as can be! Hi!
I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 14 to 34) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 23 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do. My hope in writing is to share experiences, and hopefully we can encourage one another in this wonderful, intense adventure of childraising--that is really what homeschooling is, after all.
Hoping to help, if I can!
Love, Diane
