Wow! A new year is almost here!
My granddaughters Abigail and Rebekah literally jump for joy!

Hello,

2010 is almost here—time to set some goals, time to look at your family life and the education of your children, and think about what you really want for them, and what God wants for your family. Time to get ready for a wonderful year!

The first thing I think of is organization. We have high hopes and big dreams for our children, but we need a blueprint. A map. A route finder. How to get from A to Z without getting lost and distracted along the way. It helps me to write down my hopes and dreams in my Mother's Planner and re-read them weekly to keep on track. It is so easy to lose sight of the destination, while working through the daily journey.

I want to make sure that my big ideas are in line with God's plans for my children. I may want them to sing, dance, play instruments, recite, build, create . . . achieve in many ways, and yet God's plan for their development must supersede all my desires. He has a plan for each child, for each person on this earth. The clue to their mission is manifest in their talents and their desires. My daughter Louisa loves to draw, and she has an artistic gift. God gave it to her, and I want to make sure that gift is trained and developed to bring Him the greatest glory, and to bless others. My plans must fit with God's plans for her.

Managing time is crucial. We are given a very short time to create a child's worldview and their perception of life. I know it doesn't feel "very short" while you are dealing with chickenpox and changing diapers. It does whiz by so quickly that there is precious little time to teach them all you feel they must know to succeed in life! So, taking a step back and looking at the big picture—a childhood of training and teaching and loving and enjoying—can really help you get a sense of what is important to teach them, what is vital to be involved in. There are so many opportunities for children—many fantastic choices: scouting, sports, music, scholarship, service. There are too many. We have to prayerfully choose and then manage family life so that Mom doesn't end up running around like a chicken with its head cut off, trying to drive kids here and there.

Family time—time to care for and play with siblings, to help Mom cook, to work alongside Dad, to talk—is the most valuable and has power to mold your children. I fear we put too much confidence in other programs when family life is the real instructor. Consider what your son or daughter will be doing during their future life that they need skills for. Surely being a good spouse, and being a good parent will be a #1 priority in their lives. Although such pursuits as dance, debate, band, gymnastics or swim team has its virtues, does it really teach them the skills they will need for success as a parent, and as a spouse—as much as living and working alongside Mom and Dad? Our children have the best chance of "catching" our values from spending time with us!

So, let's take a moment before the routine starts up again, and consider what is important to teach our families and get a inspired plan to follow. It doesn't have to be masterful. A start of a plan is better than nothing. In my family, I value these things:
*spirituality and a personal relationship with God
*social skills—being able to get along with others and make others feel loved, accepted and understood.
*high character—kindness, charity, unselfishness, integrity, honesty, modesty, chastity, dependability, willingness to work
*sunshine—being fun, playful, agreeable and positive
*knowledge—because the truth, in all areas, makes us free

May we be inspired as parents to teach our children right!

Diane

I Don't Have to Make Everything All Better

My Favorite Book on Getting Along Better With Other People (family especially!)

I have to admit that the first time I looked at this book, I really didn't believe the title! After all, that is what mothers are for—isn't it?—to make everything all better!? Learn how to be an understanding, loving, true friend to your family and associates with one simple principle: empathy. Allow them to take responsibility for themselves, and find some peace, Mom! Instead of feeling like you have to control things, or solve others' problems, you can learn to be an understanding listener and empower others to find their own solutions. I highly recommend this very practical book that you will put to use the moment you begin reading it. It has made our family life so much better!

The 21 Rules of This House

The first lessons in homeschool are about getting along with others, not bugging them, and obeying your teacher, right? Here's the perfect book to get you going on those important lessons!

Each rule is presented in a full-page cartoon picture for young children to color as you teach each rule. Easy teaching instructions are included too. Each rule in this book is also included as a tear-out poster so you can study and master them one by one. We put ours in a binder in plastic page protectors as we learned them, then we can easily review them often. Some of the rules are "We obey our Lord Jesus Christ," "We tell the truth," "When we make a mess, we clean it up," and "We do not create unnecessary work for others" (I like that one!). The book ends with a master list of the 21 Rules ready to post as a good reminder.

I have focused on one rule a week, introducing it with an impromptu story that I concoct to go along with the picture. My children listen attentively and are ready for the punchline, which is always "the rule." Then we memorize the rule. We review these each morning as school begins and remember to put the new rule into practice throughout the day.

It sure helps to have a rule to fall back on when correcting children, rather than just saying "We don't do that." When a certain little boy in my home laughed to see his sister cry, I could remind him of one of our rules: "When someone is sad, we comfort him." Don't miss this book!

Christian Home School Student Planner  15% Off

This is what I use in my homeschool to keep my children's work orderly and expectations clear. My Student Planner will help you organize your children's assignments and help them use their time wisely. Binder contains sections to store daily schoolwork assignments, so all their work is in one neat place. Information is included for pursuing and recording personal goals and educational goals, a personal finance section, and an address and phone section. Instructions written to Mom will help in setting up your homeschool, following a daily schedule, checking up on assignments, and choosing and completing educational goals. This planner is the result of years of experimenting to find what works to make our homeschool run smoothly. My children open their planners for school every morning—this is where all their work is kept and all their assignments are written down and checked off. They can direct themselves by doing their planned assignments. Each child (8 years and up) needs their own for a great school year.

Happy Homeschooling

This book is written from my heart to yours, both to help new homeschoolers get started and to help veteran homeschoolers get some fresh ideas. Nothing we offer generates more positive feedback—especially the article entitled, "The Baby is the Lesson!" Maybe it is because we all need a little help to keep going, along with some creative ideas, encouragement, and inspiration. Even though I wrote it, I go back and reread it when I wonder if homeschool is really worth the sacrifice. Topics cover social life, schedules that work, child discipline, a rotating academic plan for making sure you cover everything, the value of memorization, best books for read-aloud time, getting kids to do their schoolwork, how to make grammar fun, what to do with your toddler during homeschool time, father's role in the homeschool, dividing up the chores, preparing for college. . . and much more! Unique and essential information. Spiral-bound.

Choreganizers

Charts, stickers, incentives, rotations—I think we've tried everything imaginable to train our children to share in the household workload. Children need to learn how to do chores long before they can read. In Choreganizers, every chore is represented by a plastic-coated, color-illustrated card. This program includes 6 chore charts, 60 chore cards, and a Chore Store where children can redeem "Dad Dollars" or "Mom Money" to spend on privileges, healthy treats, and time with Mom or Dad. I expect my children to do basic chores without any remuneration, but extra chores could qualify for earning "Mom Money" or real money. Whatever way you choose to do it, the plastic coated chore charts and chore cards will save you lots of time, effort and money. Time to get choreganized!

Uncommon Courtesy

Once your children have the 21 Rules of This House down pat, it is time to turn your attention to the big world with some courteous know-hows on living with your fellowman respectfully and happily. Courtesy really has become uncommon! Maybe it is different where you live, but out West it seems that rudeness is the rule.

When we were young, if our parents didn't teach us to be mannerly, it still rubbed off from society, since others expected you to behave properly. Not always so today—it is time for this book! Uncommon Courtesy for Kids teaches table manners, phone manners, rules for church, courtesy words such as "pardon me," "please," and "thank you," how to treat adults, how to act on public transportation, manners in the car, and more.

Each topic is treated by listing several rules in large type so that it can be used as a visual aid or poster. The rules are also illustrated in full-page black-and-white cartoon drawings. We must choose to be courteous and develop the discipline of courtesy each day. We do not stumble into being a gentlemen or a lady. A good one!

Let's Fix the Kids  20% Off

Yes, I've had that thought many times before! "Time to buckle down and get these kids in line!" Dr. Jones is hilarious to listen to while teaching those true principles that make so much sense and are so desperately needed to help children learn to be responsible, respectful, happy people. Poems for Memorization

I've been looking for a book like this for a long time! Divided into grade levels, from first to tenth grade, there are over 200 poems especially for Christian children to enjoy and memorize. The poems for younger grades are in larger print, making them easier to read. Poetry themes include nature, good character, and faith in God. The poem "Speak Gently" was worth the price of the book for me! Paperback, 200 pages.

Speak Gently
by David Bates

Speak gently! It is better far
To rule by love, than fear
Speak gently, let not harsh words mar
The good we might do here!

Speak gently to the little child!
Its love be sure to gain;
Teach it in accents soft and mild:
It may not long remain.

Speak gently to the young, for they
Will have enough to bear
Pass through this life as best they may,
'Tis full of anxious care!

Speak gently to the aged one,
Grieve not the care-worn heart;
The sands of life are nearly run,
Let such in peace depart!

Thomas Jefferson Education

This thought-provoking book by Dr. Oliver DeMille, founder of the George Wythe College, has had a profound effect on how I learn and teach. Dr. DeMille believes that we have failed in educating our children in this country because we have failed to follow the pattern of education that the Founding Fathers participated in, namely the study of great classic literature (both children's literature and adult literature) under the loving, demanding hand of a "mentor," just the way intelligent Thomas Jefferson was taught. Dr. DeMille gives us reasons for studying the classics, discussion questions that help us analyze the classics, plus a comprehensive list of books that constitute "the good stuff." Standin' Tall
Character Training to Music

I love the cheery, value-teaching songs and motivating stories that these wonderful read-along book/tape sets provide. In fact, they have been a integral part of my childraising. Each CD contains a unique, original story with modern-day children as characters. Happy songs with easy-to-remember tunes and lyrics are included within the story. The follow-along storybook opens to a full-page drawing (suitable for coloring) on each spread, as well as the text of the story and the words to the songs. My children love these and listen to them over and over again, learning these wonderful character-building songs! My favorite set is "Obedience." The children in the story accidentally end up in the Land of Disobey, where no one keeps any rules and everything goes haywire. I often find myself singing the song, "Better Obey Your Mother" (from this set) to my children to help them remember to obey. What great lessons for young ones! 100 Hour Candles, Set of 3

100 Hour Candles, Set of 3

This handy "candle" will outlast a 3 day emergency. Burns liquid paraffin for over 100 hours of light. It is also odorless and smokeless, making it a great emergency light source. Keep one handy with a book of matches taped to it for your next power outage. The liquid fuel is sealed inside, with only the wick exposed. You can extinguish, and use again and again. A very safe source of light! Set of 3 100 hour candles.    Our Price $14.97     Going Fast! Click here

Hi!

I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 14 to 34) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 23 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do. My hope in writing is to share experiences, and hopefully we can encourage one another in this wonderful, intense adventure of childraising--that is really what homeschooling is, after all.

Hoping to help, if I can!

Love, Diane
