Hello!
Whether you live by the beach or in the snow, winter can get long. Those cloudy skies and being confined indoors can make us all a little buggy before spring rolls around. Why not create "A Day in the Tropics" at your house? It's a fun way to perk things up and dispel "cabin fever"!
Start the day by draping colorful beach towels over the backs of the dining chairs and setting the table with a bright yellow tablecloth (you can get plastic ones at the dollar store, or use a bedsheet!). Twist a streamer and lay it down the center of the table. Use tropical fruits (pineapple, coconut) and tropical fronds cutb from green construction paper to decorate the table. Little lizards and frogs make it even more fun! If you have some mood setting nature music, turn it on. The idea is to create a festive spirit to make the sun shine right inside your home!
For breakfast, serve our "Tropical Ambrosia" (kid's cooking instructions). Having the children make breakfast might make the sunshine even brighter at your house!
Wear a mumu or a Hawaiian shirt and your flip flops and sunglasses. Think "bright colors"! Let the kids dress the same. There is something so fun for kids about dressing up—especially when it is impractical weather wise. (You can always put on something warmer if you have to run errands.)
Take a few moments of school time to keep that tropical mood. Try our Tropical Quiz to see how many tropical animals and fruits your kids (and you!) can name.
Keep the sun shining by planning your garden! Why not try a Square Foot Garden this year? Mine was a huge success last year! See my garden and read my how-to steps here. Get all the details in The New Square Foot Gardening book—wonderful photo illustrations, easy directions, and over-abundant harvest results!
And finally, here are some sunny sales to brighten up your day . . . as always, at great discount prices! Get ready for outdoor play and stash away great birthday gifts. Hurry, order while the sun is still up—sale prices good just as long as supplies last!
Wishing you a sunny day!
Diane Hopkins

Your unopened seeds should store at least four years (usually much, much longer depending on storage temperature). These seeds have been carefully dried to their optimum moisture content to increase their storage life and are hermetically sealed in triple-foil packages which can be re-sealed. view | What Baby Needs 50% OffIt's a very special time when your family is waiting for a new little one to join them. This comforting book will help children get ready for that new baby and understand how they can help too. Lighthearted, full-color cartoon illustrations show a happy family interacting with the new baby: mom nursing, both mom and dad wearing a baby sling, baby sleeping near the parent's bed, and more. Hi!
I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 14 to 34) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 23 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do. My hope in writing is to share experiences, and hopefully we can encourage one another in this wonderful, intense adventure of childraising--that is really what homeschooling is, after all.
Hoping to help, if I can!
Love, Diane
