Sweet Abigail (4)
Hello!
How are you doing in your job as a Mom? I think it is easy to get busy with the books, schedules and lesson plans of homeschooling and forget to take a clear look at our "big goal". I want to raise good people who love God, family and country. That's why I homeschool. I want to be close to them, to love them fully, to be a good mom to them. That's why I homeschool.
What a blessing it is to have children under our influence! I am trying to make that influence a very good influence—it makes such a difference in the long run! We all raise clones, for better or for worse. So much responsibility lies on our shoulders, Mothers. A friend once suggested to me that homeschooling is really "celestial mothering". I like that term!
"The happy people are the ones who are good, who were loved and cared for and played with as children, and who therefore have an enormous capacity now to love and care and play. Other people, including their own children, enjoy their company. Everyone is happier because of them. Civilization works better because of them."—Orson Scott Card
It takes effort to be a "Jump Up" Mother. But responding to those "Look-it, Mom" calls goes a long way in cementing a life long relationship. Let's focus on, take the time, and really put in the effort to be a good mom. With the world in increasing chaos, we may feel powerless. It is so true that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. There is nothing that will have such a lasting impact on the world than our good mothering. We are far, far more powerful than we realize!
Remember, love is spelled "T-I-M-E" to a child.
Diane Hopkins

 view | The 21 Rules of This House 10% OffThe first lessons in homeschool are about getting along with others, not bugging them, and obeying your teacher, right? Here's the perfect book to get you going on those important lessons!
Each rule is presented in a full-page cartoon picture for young children to color as you teach each rule. Easy teaching instructions are included too. Each rule in this book is also included as a tear-out poster so you can study and master them one by one. We put ours in a binder in plastic page protectors as we learned them, then we can easily review them often. Some of the rules are "We obey our Lord Jesus Christ," "We tell the truth," "When we make a mess, we clean it up," and "We do not create unnecessary work for others" (I like that one!). The book ends with a master list of the 21 Rules ready to post as a good reminder.
I have focused on one rule a week, introducing it with an impromptu story that I concoct to go along with the picture. My children listen attentively and are ready for the punchline, which is always "the rule." Then we memorize the rule. We review these each morning as school begins and remember to put the new rule into practice throughout the day.
It sure helps to have a rule to fall back on when correcting children, rather than just saying "We don't do that." When a certain little boy in my home laughed to see his sister cry, I could remind him of one of our rules: "When someone is sad, we comfort him." Don't miss this book!

I think all of us have someone in our life that fits the description, even if it is ourselves! This insightful book by psychologist John Lund teaches us how to "hug a porcupine," or in other words, deal with those people in our life that are "prickly."

Drawing on the wisdom of centuries, Stephen Covey's ideas are not only his own, but comprise gems of knowledge that he has gathered from every source. These seven winning concepts, of course, are founded in the gospel of Jesus Christ, but Dr. Covey writes in such a manner that all people can readily accept and enjoy the benefits of successful family life, no matter what their religion. What truth lies in these simple principles! Just striving to begin to live the "habits" has caused enormous growth in my own self and greater closeness with my family members. Highly recommended. view | Poems for Memorization I've been looking for a book like this for a long time! Divided into grade levels, from first to tenth grade, there are over 200 poems especially for Christian children to enjoy and memorize. The poems for younger grades are in larger print, making them easier to read. Poetry themes include nature, good character, and faith in God. The poem "Speak Gently" was worth the price of the book for me! Paperback, 200 pages.
Speak Gently
by David Bates
Speak gently! It is better far
To rule by love, than fear
Speak gently,let not harsh words mar
The good we might do here!
Speak gently to the little child!
Its love be sure to gain;
Teach it in accents soft and mild:
It may not long remain.
Speak gently to the young, for they
Will have enough to bear
Pass through this life as best they may,
'Tis full of anxious care!
Speak gently to the aged one,
Grieve not the care-worn heart;
The sands of life are nearly run,
Let such in peace depart!

 view | Let's Fix the Kids 20% OffYes, I've had that thought many times before! "Time to buckle down and get these kids in line!" I have Dr. James Jones to thank, in large part, for teaching me the principles of childraising that have formed the foundation of child discipline in our home. Learning precious truths by sad experience in his own family, Dr. Jones's hard-earned lessons make the principles he teaches real and credible. Dr. Jones is hilarious to listen to while teaching those true principles that make so much sense and are so desperately needed to help children learn to be responsible, respectful, happy people. Set of 16 CD's are life-changing when applied to your own children's behavior. One small warning: you might need a little "fixin" yourself. Do yourself and your children a favor and apply this program!

 view | I Am A Home Schooler 50% OffWhat is it like to be a homeschooler? This charming picture storybook for children tells the real story of a 9 year old homeschool girl and what her days are like. Color tinted photographs and large print make it fun to read aloud. I especially like this book, because it creates a valid feeling for children. They see other real children enjoying and learning in homeschool. After reading it, my daughter asked, "Can we do school like they do, today?". Giving this book for a gift could create a great bridge of understanding for friends and relatives with children who may not understand homeschool. (Rick commented that it would be a good how-to manual for beginning homeschool parents!) Hardcover, 32 pages.

Because they are so catchy, they stick in your mind and form a ready-made sermon whenever needed. The children in the story accidentally end up in the Land of Disobey, where no one keeps any rules and everything goes haywire. view | Uncle Arthur Storytime Books: Teach Character with Bedtime Stories! 44% OffEverybody loves a story! Evenings at my house are time for read-aloud, and my children's favorite stories have always been Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories. These charming, old-fashioned stories have incredible appeal because they are true! These tales really happened, and they sometimes turn out disastrously! Each story is just a few pages long, so it is easy to sneak one in here and there in a busy schedule.
The five-volume set has a publication date of 1976, and it is actually a collection of the best stories found in the 1964 version, so you know old-fashioned Christian values are alive and well. In addition to the real stories about real children, each book has a story from the Bible. Each book has 192 pages, a glossy picture cover, and wonderful color drawings throughout. The very best thing about these stories is that they speak right to a child's heart! I read my daughter Louisa the story "Two Carolines," a story about a little girl who was very pleasant and lovable when out of the house but not very happy to those at home. A day later, Louisa came to me to confess, "I am like that story, Mom." The best part was that I never said one word! I read the story out loud, then Louisa saw herself in it and strived to correct her own behavior. Ooh, hard to beat that kind of powerful teaching—teaching through parables!
One of the stories my grown children remember best is "The Hollow Pie." Seems a certain young man always grabbed the biggest piece for himself rather than watching out for others and saying, "You go first." After a very disappointing dinner, one very sorry boy learned that maybe the biggest isn't always the best!
If a set will bless the whole family for years to come, this is it! As always, your satisfaction is unconditionally guaranteed.

I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 14 to 34) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 23 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do.
