Time to gear up for a new school year!

Hello,

School's a-comin'! I prefer to swim, and garden and enjoy the lazy days of summer! But school will start, and we'll need to be ready, so let's get that school room up and running!

Just getting the school room ready is enough get enthusiasm brewing. Even if you only have a little corner in the living room, or a spot at the kitchen table, use a space on the wall nearby to create a school area. Hang your school calendar, maps, plus a bulletin board—or just tape up a big piece of colored paper—so you'll have a place to display work your kids do, as well as announcements to spur interest, such as: "Field Trip to Museum, coming Sept 1st!"

I buy inexpensive bins (or gather empty cookie or cracker case boxes at the grocery store) to make my children each a "school bin" with their name on it. This bin is where they store all their books, notebook, pencil box and supplies. We can grab it and go to the table or elsewhere, having all their needed materials. We keep our bins on a shelf for easy access. I like the neatness and organization of this, rather than having books, scissors, crayons, maps . . . strewn about.

School's starting soon . . . a chance to teach and learn with your kids! Have fun with it!

Set up your school room up with these favorites:

*All Year Weather Graph

Chart the weather daily with this colorful graph!

*World Globe

Essential equipment for homeschool!

*Fabric Calendar Pocket Chart

I use this every morning in homeschool!

*Love to Learn Homeschool Handbook

What to use, how to set up your day, how to homeschool!

*National Geographic Wall Maps

Top quality National Geographic laminated wall maps make such a difference!

To a wonderful homeschool year!

Diane

P.S. If you have a reluctant student, come and read my blog: "Doesn't Want to Homeschool" for some tips on how to stir excitment for homeschool. If homeschool looks more fun than public school, you'll have an eager student!

Musical Notebooks

Teaching facts to the rhythm of music really makes them stick. I even find myself singing the "Prime Numbers" song to my teenagers when they ask me a related math question. The "Months of the Year" song is also a regular in our homeschool. At age 3, Emily could sing "Bones" by heart and it is still a favorite. Catchy, quality songs teach geography, math, science, months, days of the week, classic poetry, and more. Book contains illustrations, lyrics to the songs, activities, and suggestions for teaching units on each theme song. Plastic coated wipe-off pages allow children to write in names of planets on the illustrated "planet" page, "bones" chart, and more. Created by a homeschooling family. History Time Lines

I like time lines. If they are simple, they can provide a magnificent framework in your child's mind on which to "hang" other information, making sense of history. Remember history the easy way—with a time line posted on your schoolroom wall! Each Time Line kit contains two sets of each card: one in full color, and one in black and white, ready to be colored to personalize your own time line, or use in suggested games. Brief historical information is ready to present to your students as each time line figure is added. You can also learn the "History in Action" rap. Each date and event has a keyword or phrase and a hand action to go with it. This action/rhyme is fun to learn and delightful to perform! Hands-on and visual, a fun approach to history!

US History Time Line

36 vividly colored cards depict key events and people in U.S. history from Columbus to Valley Forge, the Constitution to the Alamo, the Civil War to Pearl Harbor, Vietnam to the Berlin Wall coming down—this is one comprehensive history lesson! Date cards are included along with information so you can teach each event. Notes explain how to make a simple time line on which to place the cards as you study about them. A bonus: instructions are included for teaching "United States History in Action," a 60- second spoken summary noting the 36 important people and events in U.S. history. Also, a memory "walk through" of the U.S. Presidents. Say each phrase while doing the hand motions and you'll never forget it. Pretty impressive showoff material!

None Dare Call It Education

The large majority of all American children will receive a public school education. That means our future communities and nation will be made up of doctors, teachers, businessmen and politicians who have been trained by the public school system. This thought- provoking book has been thoroughly researched and overflows with quotes and documented information from textbooks, from the media, and from the schools themselves. None Dare Call it Education explains why our once-great public school system now graduates students who cannot read, write, or calculate. "It is must reading for all parents" says Phyllis Schafley of Eagle Forum. If you need a reason to homeschool or want to help your spouse or relatives understand, take a good look at this book. Thomas Jefferson Education  15% Off

This thought-provoking book by Dr. Oliver DeMille, founder of the George Wythe College, has had a profound effect on how I learn and teach. Dr. DeMille believes that we have failed in educating our children in this country because we have failed to follow the pattern of education that the Founding Fathers participated in, namely the study of great classic literature (both children's literature and adult literature) under the loving, demanding hand of a "mentor," just the way intelligent Thomas Jefferson was taught. Dr. DeMille gives us reasons for studying the classics, discussion questions that help us analyze the classics, plus a comprehensive list of books that constitute "the good stuff." Bear's Guide to Earning College Degrees Nontraditionally   10% Off

Talk about a change of perspective! This book dramatically altered the way I look at college degrees. The author goes on to teach you how to get that necessary degree in a myriad of nontraditional ways such as correspondence courses and on-line study, examination for credit, credit for life experience, and many more. Scholarships and financial aid are available too. Detailed listings are included of institutions you can go through to achieve your goal as well as "degree mills," scams to avoid. You can earn an accredited Bachelor's, Master's, Doctorate, law, even medical degree—faster, cheaper and more thoroughly nontraditionally. Hi!

I am Diane Hopkins, mother of 7 children (ages 14 to 34) whom I have had the privilege of homeschooling over the past 23 years. I'm a mom, just like you, and have those fabulous days and those not-so-good days like we all do. My hope in writing is to share experiences, and hopefully we can encourage one another in this wonderful, intense adventure of childraising--that is really what homeschooling is, after all.

Hoping to help, if I can!

Love, Diane
