Asian students are famous for their mathematical prowess, and these are the books that they use to gain those skills. If you want your child to learn to think mathematically, not just be able to solve math problems, you will be pleased and surprised with how well your student progresses. The textbooks teach the concepts and the workbooks are designed to be done independently by your student, and are paperback, with happy, color illustrations—very kid friendly. We offer the U.S. edition (which has been minimally modified to teach American money and U.S. spellings). Test scores conclusively and repeatedly put Singapore Primary Mathematics in top rank in international tests! Singapore's genius is in a unique pattern of moving from hands-on demonstrations, to picture drawings (concrete examples with pictures) to the abstract (numbers and symbols) in a natural, easy-to-understand progression. Students go right from Singapore level 6 into Saxon Algebra 1 with ease.
At the elementary grade level, Singapore Math includes two semesters of instruction per year, with a paperback textbook (non-consumable) plus a write-in workbook per semester. You may buy extra write-in workbooks for additional students, and share the textbook. The Answer Key is a "just answers" book that covers 3 full years of Singapore Math. Most children can learn the concepts from the textbooks, do the workbooks themselves and correct them with the Answer Key.
The Home Instructor Guide will help you teach Singapore math lessons step by step, beginning with a concrete example to help your child understand the concept being taught, plus additional examples and activities. Learning math facts is a necessary part of the curriculum and suggestions on how to help students memorize math facts, as well as some mental math sheets are in the Home Instructor Guide, so it is recommended to round out the curriculum. The Answer Key is also included in the Home Instructor Guide, so you don't need both books. (Note: there is no Home Instructor Guide available for Level 1, you will just need the Answer Key only.)
I wish all curriculum choices were as easy as this! Saxon has proven to have the best mathematics text available today. Every school in the U.S. that has used them has raised college board scores 20% and has tripled Calculus enrollment, has doubled Physics enrollment and has reduced the number of kids on the slow track by over 50%. The reason? Normal math books introduce a new concept with each chapter, then drop that topic as the next chapter goes on to something new. This week, it's multiplication; next week it is fractions, and I can't remember multiplication! In Saxon books, the concepts are practiced daily, over and over, until they are fully automatic and math becomes easier and more enjoyable.
Here's what each grade has to offer:
Primary Grades 1 - 3: complete kit contains paperback consumable Student Workbooks (part 1 & 2), Fact Cards, Teacher Manual & Meeting Book.
Two big Student Workbooks contain worksheet pages, giving practice and problems for the day's concept and are the core of the program. Fact Cards are flashcards used to drill the basic math facts. (I prefer Math-it for this purpose, as it gives children a way to figure out the math facts.) Homeschool Teacher's Manual contains 130-140 lessons with step-by-step scripts and instructions and is spiral-bound to lie flat when open. Approx. 700 to 850 pages. Meeting Book is used for the daily opening exericise and provides a fun way to teach the days, years and dates.
Middle Grades 4 - 8: contains paperback non-consumable Textbook, Tests and Worksheets, and a Solutions Manual.
Customized for homeschoolers, this 2-color textbook contains 120 lessons and 12 investigations. Approx. 630 pages. There are no answers in the back of the book. A separate consumable workbook contains worksheets, facts practice and tests for one year. Solutions Manual has full step-by-step solutions to all lessons and tests.
Upper Grades 9 - 12: includes a non-consumable hardcover Textbook, Tests and Answer Key, and Solutions Manual
For Pre-Algebra through Calculus. Hardcover textbook has approx 125 lessons plus additional topics. Answers to odd numbered problems are in the back of the book. Approximately 500 pages. Tests and Answer Key included, as well as a Solutions Manual which gives step-by-step solutions to all the practices and problems.

Lowest Price Guarantee on D.I.V.E.!
D.I.V.E. CD's for Saxon Math
Imagine your homeschool without Mom having to be the math teacher! Imagine your children going quietly to the computer with their Saxon math book and having a gentle, softspoken male tutor explain the lesson's concept and working the practice problems on the chalkboard just for them. Imagine no more frustration and tears because things are so very well explained, and they can be re-explained as many times as needed in the same patient tone of voice!
You don't have to imagine any longer, because this is exactly what "D.I.V.E. Into Math" has done for my homeschool! Hurrah! D.I.V.E. means "Digital Interactive Video Education," and what your student will see is the computer screen transformed into a chalkboard and the teacher's chalk writing appearing as he talks and works the problems. I balked at spending $50 to explain an already pricey math book, until I used this fabulous program. Now I say: "It is worth every penny!" I haven't taught math in my homeschool for 2 years now—and my children are doing better in math than they ever have before! Note: you will need the matching Saxon textbook(of the same edition) to use this program. Each level Includes one or two CD-ROMS teaching every lesson in the book!
This DIVE CD plays on Mac and Windows 98 and higher operating systems, including Vista.

Lowest Price Guarantee on Life of Fred Math!
Life of Fred Math
Louisa used to hate math. Then we discovered The Life of Fred and now she LOVES math!
At first, I was highly suspicious as I listened to Louisa laugh through her math lessons and totally enjoy doing them. I was stunned to watch her go straight for math when she started her homeschool work each morning. I picked up the book and read an outlandish story about a miniature boy named Fred and all his adventures. I couldn't imagine she was really learning math, so I asked her to tell me what she had learned so far in the 16 lessons she had completed. She quickly jotted down this list for me:
infinite sets
natural numbers
integers
set notation
ratios
coefficients . . . (need I go on?)
I was impressed to say the least! How could a girl who hates math actually be enjoying Algebra and really learning the terminology as well as how to do the operations? I contacted Stan Schmidt, the author of the Life of Fred, and a retired college math professor of 28 years whose self-proclaimed mission is to help kids love math. I asked him, "How do I know a student who does Life of Fred will retain it?," to which he replied, "How much of your school algebra did you retain?" Ouch!
The idea behind Life of Fred is that if students have an enjoyable experience and have fun doing their math, they will remember it and use it and have a good taste in their math about the whole subject. The sub-title on each of his math books is "As Serious As it Needs to Be". And that is just the point: math doesn't need to be horrid and dry. This is math—just as serious as it needs to be—and I can tell you from Louisa's smiles and chuckles, that's not very serious at all!
As a bonus, these books are very low priced compared to any other math books on the market. (Compare to Saxon at $50-70). If you have a creative child who is languishing on traditional math programs, you'll love Life of Fred! Math, As Serious As it Needs to Be!
If you know your math facts (addition and multiplication) and you can read well, then the next step is to get to know Fred!
Beware: This is not a traditional math book. This is a child-directed course. The student reads the adventure story, does the math problems that occur as a natural part of the story, and checks their answers (the solutions are right there for the looking.) And learns to love math in the process!

Lowest Price Guarantee on Apologia Science!
Apologia Science
One of the things I really love about Apologia science books is that I don't have to always be running interference, and trying to explain our faith in a God who created the universe. That seems to be a dominant problem when using secular science resources. When teaching astronomy, I am always faced with the Big Bang theory, the "trillions of years old" stuff, and trying to keep faith strong in the face of scientific "proof" that we are all evolved creatures living in an accidental universe. Apologia's Astronomy book is fabulous for giving reasons to support faith in God while teaching scientific truths! One of the interesting facts presented by this book is that Venus spins the opposite direction than the other planets in our solar system. The Big Bang theory says a big explosion set the planets all spinning, whirling out the same direction from a central "bang". If this was so, Venus should also be rotating the same direction. I love learning facts that support Christian doctrines!
Apologia's "Exploring Creation Series" is the #1 science curriculum for homeschoolers! I think it is the very best way to teach a family all at once, since it covers ages K-6th grade. Instead of trying to do a "cover everything" approach, Apologia textbooks are very specific to one field of science, such as Botany, Zoology, Astronomy, etc. which is not what we are used to for young children, but oh, it works so well! We can really delve into the subject! One textbook is to be used as a year-long family unit study which I really appreciate, as it is so much easier to teach all the kids the same topic, and do the experiments together.
The chapters are fun to read aloud together, as the tone is conversational, like "let's all learn together!" There are hands-on activities, and experiments at the end of each chapter that we had a good time doing, plus they didn't use any odd ingredients so I could really pull them together quickly—I love that! Each student develops their own science notebook that contains their writing "narrations" of the things they have learned along with their illustrations, vocabulary words, projects, etc. This really works and is fun! My kids were excited about the cool science notebooks they were involved making.
Even if you don't feel confident in teaching science to your children, you will find the help you need in these books designed especially for homeschoolers. Written by a former university professor who is Christian, these textbooks are presented in conversational style, as if the author is having a good talk with the reader. Concepts are easy to understand, and good experiments can easily be performed at home. Each course comes as a 2-book set: the hardcover textbook and a paperback solutions/test manual. These are the bestselling science books among homeschoolers!
Companion CDs available for higher grades. Each course has 12-16 modules, which can be paced for 2 weeks each, for a complete school year's study. The curriculum is backed by free question/answer support in case you need tutoring. The Companion CD has narrations, video segments, and animations to enrich the textbook course.

Lowest Price Guarantee on Christian Liberty Nature Readers!
Christian Liberty Nature Reader Set
These old-fashioned nature readers are written from a child's view with wonder and delight in nature and the animal kingdom. Scientific observations of nature are brought to life in story form, making them fun to read and learn from. Each chapter ends with questions to help the child explain what he has learned. This classic reader is updated from texts of 19th-century school books and is still fascinating and accurate. It was in these books that we discovered that the dreaded tomato hornworm comes from the eggs of the large and beautiful hummingbird moth that we frequently see at dusk flitting around our flower beds! Grades 1 to 5. Black-and- white drawings, Paperback, 163 pages.
An excellent set for science reading. My kids learned so much from these old-fashioned and wonderful books!
Here are the ideal activity pages on excellent quality paper with colorful graphics. Developed by an Asian company to give kids the cutting edge with an early start in education and skills. These thick workbooks are a preschooler's or kindergartner's mother's dream-come-true! One page is enough to keep your preschooler busily working and happy for 15-20 minutes—a bargain indeed! Kids love them, and you'll be amazed at the fine motor skill development you will see!
These beginning-level books provide children with opportunities to learn to essential. Simple and fun drawing exercises start with vertical straight lines, and then gradually shift to more difficult lines, such as curves, zigzags, and diagonal lines, providing children with an ideal preparation for learning to write letters and numbers. Ages 2-4 years. 80 pages, 8 1/2" x 11" on high quality paper.
When my son Ammon was a very bright, wiggly and energetic 5-year-old, he couldn't seem to get interested in workbooks or sit still for lessons. The only way I could get his attention long enough to teach him to read was to play games with him. Over the years, these games have evolved into an easy, happy way to teach children to read, from the very first step (learning the ABC song) through advanced phonics and spelling.
Simple, yet entertaining and educational, these phonics games are printed on colorful, sturdy cardstock ready to cut out. Included is a mother-friendly guidebook which contains the details on how I teach phonics and reading, how to pronounce and teach the phonics sounds, how to make your own simple beginning readers, and step-by-step teaching info for each phonics sound.
Happy Phonics covers beginning to advanced phonics and is the sum total of my experience. My children enjoy the games and never really realize that they are drilling phonics sounds! Enjoy learning games, little books, and activities as well as a 76-page beginning reader, My Big Book. Use with the Explode the Code Primers for a complete manuscript handwriting and phonics course.
I think you will be very pleased with the pain-free, rapid reading results! I guarantee you will love it and your child will learn to read, or I'll send your money right back—happily!
I am excited and surprised to report that Happy Phonics was selected for the prestigious "Cathy Duffy's Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum" award!
Complete set includes Happy Phonics, the three primer workbooks Get Ready for the Code, A, B, C that are used as a companion to this program for teaching handwriting and reinforcing phonic sounds plus the Teacher's Guide and Answer Key to A, B & C. This game-based phonics program was selected for the prestigious "Cathy Duffy's Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum" award. Especially effective for teaching a wiggly child that loves games. A fun way to teach reading!
Here is my favorite resource for teaching your young child the sounds the letters make, and how to write them! Begin with 3 primer workbooks that open horizontally to a clean, bright format with simple line drawings done by children. This set of Explode the Code Primers (A, B, C) teaches all the consonant letters thoroughly with a whopping 12 pages of fun activities for each letter. The most fun is the riddle page. Mom reads the riddles (found in the Teacher's Manual, or create your own) while the child follows instructions carefully. For example, after learning the letter "f" (how to write it, its sound, and its capital letter) the first riddle says: "I am thinking of something that is often made of wood. It keeps animals in a yard or field. What is it?" Now the child looks at all the drawings on his page and finds the fence. "What sound does fence begin with? ("ffff"). Color the fence green." Each object that the child finds to answer the riddle has a different direction with it, such as put an X on it, or color it red and yellow, etc.
Move on to more challenges: Book 1 teaches short vowel sounds Book 2 teaches consonant blends Book 3 teaches the phonic units sh, th, wh, ch, ng, ck, tch, ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, and ow. Book 4 covers compound words, suffixes, syllable division rules, and 3-syllable words. Book 5 teaches the sound families: all, alk, old, olt, oll, ild, ind, thr, shr, scr, str, spr, spl, qu, -ey words, and the sounds of ed. Book 6 contains ar, or, er, ir, ur, wor, war, ea, ie, igh, oo, oi, oy, ou, ow, au, aw, ew, ui, ue, ou. Book 7 covers soft c and g, silent letters, ear, ph, ei, eigh. Book 8 teaches suffixes and endings.
If you feel your child needs a little more practice at a certain level, each level has a "1/2" book: 1 1/2, 2 1/2, etc. that provides more practice on the same concepts as the book before it So, if your child finishes Book 2 and isn't really confident with the concepts, let him do Book 2 1/2 and he'll be ready for Book 3.
I would recommend moving forward just as quickly as your child can handle it. (It never hurts to tape a dollar bill inside the cover as a motivation!) As soon as your child has gone through the primer books, and done a few pages in Book 1, he will be able to read a beginning phonetic book, like Decodable Little Books. Paperback, 78 pages per book. You'll love these!

Lowest Price Guarantee on Reason for Handwriting!
A Reason for Writing
Kids! The last time I made decisions on handwriting programs, I gathered every handwriting book I could find to review and I painstakingly selected the best program for the money. Then Ammon (5 years old then) went through my reject pile and found one that he liked even better. It is more expensive, but he was right, it is much more fun! Each day's handwriting page rips out of the workbook.
First lessons teach how to make basic strokes before actually teaching letter formation. Children trace inviting drawings of grapes, bubbles, and other circles to gain the skills needed for writing. As letters are taught, each page presents the letter of the day to be traced, written, and practiced. On the back of the page, a large line drawing of an animal (or something from nature whose name begins with the letter practiced) is waiting to be colored and cut out. This was the part Ammon looked so forward to.

Lowest Price Guarantee on Handwriting Without Tears!
Handwriting Without Tears
When trying to learn to write brought her little boy to tears, Jan Olsen found a remedy. She shares her creative suggestions and learning tips in this excellent "how-to" book which helps you determine if your child is ready to start handwriting. If not, no problem—there are plenty of hands-on readiness activities such as using "letter manipulatives" (pattern and instructions provided).
This program includes unique ideas for helping children learn to write their letters and numbers without frustration, tips for the left-handed child, discussion on why it is important to teach capitals first and why standard handwriting paper just confuses children. The author even has remedies for the common mistakes children make, such as letter reversals, floating letters, etc.
I used this program with my son Ammon, and he basically taught himself cursive using the workbooks. One drawback is that the final cursive writing does not have the lovely slant and pretty loops. It's very legible and easy to write, however.

This overall course is complete, covering everything from antecedent pronouns and appositives through how to write a business letter. Younger grades require someone to explain the concept using the Teacher's Manual before the doing the lessons. Easy to teach, easy to learn, and easy to remember—this thorough, regular day-by-day practice makes perfect!

Lowest Price Guarantee on Wordsmith!
WordSmith
I loved using WordSmith for creative writing assignments this year, but found that my younger children who weren't secure in the parts of speech (noun, adjective, etc.) struggled along. Hooray! Now a self-directed course of the same quality for the younger student, ages 9-12. Topics include "So You Think You Hate Writing," word games using parts of speech, sentence structure, figures of speech, describing a person, narrative, writing dialogue, point of view, how to proofread, etc. The exercises are great for reluctant writers with enough fun to keep them going. Children must know some basic grammar (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) before using this course. Optional Teacher's Manual briefly explains daily lesson information and assignments and gives possible answers, but is not essential. Paperback, 90 pages, ages 12 and up.

Lowest Price Guarantee on Usborne History volumes!
Usborne History
I have studied the books made by the publishers Kingfisher, DK, Time Life, and several other publishers to find the very best history encyclopedias, and, in my view, these beats all! Colorful volumes present the big picture of life on planet earth up to the present day. The Complete Encyclopedia is actually four independent volumes bound together: Prehistoric World, Ancient World, Medieval World and The Last 500 Years. Excellent color illustrations, photographs, maps and information create a visual feast. The feature I like best is that it divides history according to civilization geographically (rather than jumping from nation to nation chronologically), making it so much easier to follow and remember. Another incredible feature is that it is internet-linked! You can visit age-appropriate internet sites from reputable universities and museums throughout the world and get up-to-date information and exciting activities such as printing out your name in hieroglyphics or actually listening to a famous speech online. Usborne keeps all links up to date. (bad news: Prehistoric World, the first section in the book, is all about dinosaurs and contains graphic evolution. I begin teaching history with the Ancient World section, prefacing it with the creation story. Hardcover, 415 pages, for ages 10 to adult.
