The concept taught in this book is incredible! Everyone, not just the artistic, can learn to draw realistically just as nearly everyone can read or write. 222 lessons clearly and simply teach hands-on such principles as alignment, perspective, foreshortening, shading, etc. You and your children can master the skill of drawing just like you learned to read—through simple lessons teaching basic skills and practice. I draw the lesson (such as a box in 3-D) step-by-step on a paper or chalkboard and have the children draw along with me on their papers. You will see unbelievable improvement in just a few lessons! How to Use Child-Size Masterpieces for Art Appreciation
This teacher/parent guidebook will help you teach hands-on art appreciation at every level, using inexpensive color postcards. The program is unique in that you can know absolutely nothing about art and learn right along with your children. Being able to handle the masterpieces is a far cry from the hands-off feeling of museums. Scribble Art
This excellent collection of over 200 creative art experiences for children is my first choice for my homeschool and will keep you going on art projects in every medium for at least a whole year. Chapters include: Paper & Collage, Crayon & Chalk, Paint & Dye, Printing, Sculpting & Modeling, and Craft & Construction with more than 20 different projects in each chapter. I've found this book to be the one best source of all kinds of interesting creative projects such as: veggie prints, newspaper sculpture, bead clay, marbling, wire sculpture, puppetry, treasure box, branch weaving, goop, bubble print, puff paint and much more. You'll find enough imaginative help to easily take you through a year of creative art instruction. I personally prefer this approach to art, rather than the "cut-and-color-from-a-copy" approach. Paperback, black and white pleasing illustrations, 158 pages. Highly recommended for all ages.
Discovering Great Artists
I can't imagine a better way to really learn about the great artists than to try out their styles and methods! This ingenious book introduces 110 unique art activities to lead your child into experiencing the techniques of the great masters, from the Renaissance to the present. A brief biography of each artist is followed by a fully illustrated encounter with sculpting, drawing, architecture and more. What could be more memorable after learning about Michelangelo than to try painting while lying on your back, Sistine-chapel-style? These art appreciation lessons will not be soon forgotten! The 21 Rules of This House
The first lessons in homeschool are about getting along with others, not bugging them, and obeying your teacher, right? Here's the perfect book to get you going on those important lessons!
Each rule is presented in a full-page cartoon picture for young children to color as you teach each rule. Easy teaching instructions are included too. Each rule in this book is also included as a tear-out poster so you can study and master them one by one. We put ours in a binder in plastic page protectors as we learned them, then we can easily review them often. Some of the rules are "We obey our Lord Jesus Christ," "We tell the truth," "When we make a mess, we clean it up," and "We do not create unnecessary work for others" (I like that one!). The book ends with a master list of the 21 Rules ready to post as a good reminder. . . . more.
Honey for a Child's Heart
"Read me a story!" Read-aloud time can be such a powerful force for good in the family! Children don't stumble onto excellent reading by themselves; they need the guidance of an experienced parent. My dilemma has always been how to weed out the few excellent pieces of literature from the pile of questionable stuff in the huge public library or bookstores. Honey for a Child's Heart struck a chord in me, as I read Christian author Gladys Hunt's explanation of the purpose of good reading: to uplift and inspire mankind to higher living. Chapters include what makes a good book, fantasy and realism, poetry, scripture reading and more. Includes an excellent indexed and updated 85 page list of the best children's favorites—that alone makes this book well worth its price. I highly recommend this motivating book! Paperback, 224 pages, black and white illustrations from favorite children's books.
Poems for Memorization
I've been looking for a book like this for a long time! Divided into grade levels, from first to tenth grade, there are over 200 poems especially for Christian children to enjoy and memorize. The poems for younger grades are in larger print, making them easier to read. Poetry themes include nature, good character, and faith in God.

We live in an age when being able to use a computer keyboard is a necessity. I like to teach my children to type while still quite young. It gives them the freedom of being able to get their thoughts down on paper long before they have the fine muscle coordination to tirelessly handwrite out a story or journal entry. Besides, they can do it! Typing Instructor is unsurpassed for teaching quality, and the format is plenty of fun. After the lesson, you can choose from 60 music selections (or silence) to type along with, and the typing practice can be chosen from hundreds of interesting magazine-type articles on all subjects. Math-it
Ta-dah! Here is the BEST thing ever invented for learning math facts! Instead of teaching your child to memorize math facts, teach him how to figure them out and he will never "forget"! For example: learning the "9 times" is easy when you realize that every answer is two digits that add up to 9: 4 x 9 = 36. The digits 3 + 6 = 9. The first digit of the answer (3) is easy to figure out because it is just a count back one (from 4 to 3). Games include Add-it, Double-it, Half-it and Times-it, plus a teacher-friendly, illustrated manual. I don't know how any teacher gets along without it. (Take my advice and laminate the game boards and cards before you wear them out like I did.) Highly recommended!

Eureka, we found it! It isn't easy to find a child-friendly history of the world for elementary age students that is so user-friendly, and do-it-yourself feeling as this unique book. I like the very appealing format with large font, colorful drawings and photos, plus it is written in story form. Each chapter is a two or three page spread with some fill-in-the-blanks, project or activity at the end. This is a big paperback that feels more like a workbook than a textbook, but is quite thorough on teaching an entire overview of world history! 288 pages, for ages 9-12 years.
