This very good learn-to-read program includes professional graphics and slick learning activities: word wheels, stick puppets, flip books, letter dice, worksheets, and more. The Teacher’s Manuals are great for both beginning and veteran teachers as all lesson plans are laid out clearly with materials needed listed, questions you are to ask scripted, teacher dialogue and student answers included, and activities described in detail. No preparation is needed—you just read the Teacher’s Manual step-by-step as you teach. Skills assessments (tests) help you know what your student needs to work on. This program contains everything you need to teach reading, spelling, grammar, an easy form of italic handwriting, phonics, higher-order thinking skills, and creative writing.

The Blue Book (Beginning Kit ) is where you start. The kit says “First Grade,” but you can happily teach your child to read using this program whenever he is ready, which is usually about 4 to 5 years old. Contains an easy-to-use Teacher's Manual, 28 illustrated story readers, flashcards, 225-page Student Activity Book, and lots of fun props.

Learning Language Arts the Natural WayThe language arts curriculum we were using was advertised as "literature based." However it did not live up to our expectations and turned our child off of the subject of language arts. We began to search for a literature based curriculum which taught language arts in a gentle, engaging format. Our search ended when we discovered "Learning Language Arts Through Literature."

Learning Language Arts Through Literature is based on the educational philosophy of Dr. Ruth Beechick and her natural learning methods as outlined in her books, "The Three R's" and "Language and Thinking for Young Children." The curriculum is written by Debbie Strayer, a homeschooling mother and teacher. Learning Language Arts Through Literature Blue Book is a language arts curriculum which teachers phonics, spelling, reading, grammar, vocabulary, handwriting and higher order reasoning skills using such children's classics as "Who Took the Farmer's Hat, Goodnight Moon, Blueberries for Sal, Make Way for Ducklings, The Snowy Day." In addition to classic children's literature Learning Language Arts Through Literature incorporates hands on activities, cut and paste, word wheels, flip books, picture sequencing, readers, story telling puppets, and handwriting activity pages. The student workbook is consumable. The instructor's guide leads you through the curriculum. Everything is explained in the lesson as to what you will be covering for the week and what supplies are needed.
